How to Read the Bible As a Beginner

Now you might be thinking, “what does this title mean you just pick it up and read it.” Yes, you can do that but as a christian who has been in church since the womb, I’m not afraid to admit I struggle reading my Bible. I’m continually trying to do better and be more consistent and grow in my walk with God. Here are some steps you can follow to have a better relationship with Christ and reading your Word.

Step 1: Figure out which translation works for you

If you are a beginner I highly recommend starting with the New International Version, New Living Translation or my personal favorite Christian Standard Bible. It is easier for you to read while giving some of the best translation from the original text.

I was given my Christian Standard Bible from my pastor at the time when I graduated high school and I fell in love with it. Not only was it easier for me to read but it was the one best tool in my Bible Studies. Mine is not a hardcore Study Bible but I’ve been able to find ways to put my thoughts in the margins and use washie tap to put my thoughts in my Bible.

Step 2: Pick a starting point

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT START AT THE BEGINNING! I have done this so many themes and read Genesis through so many times I’ve lost count. I think the best way to start your journey is to read the Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John at the beginning of the New Testament. I think its important to read everything but if you start from the beginning and you don't have much experience with the text, it can be overwhelming.

If you want to start in the Old testament I recommend reading either Proverbs, Psalms(kinda long but amazing), or Jonah.

Step 3: Study strategies

On Etsy I found some papers that separated Bible books by categories and I color coded them with highlighters. While I read, I highlight verses according to my color key and it is so much fun but also helps me study and stay engaged. It helps me keep everything organized. Others was it to pick colors to highlight themes and key concepts throughout your reading such as Direct commands, prophecies, God’s promises, etc.

Step 4: Pray and ask God to show what he wants to reveal to you

Prayer is very important, I mean read ! Thessalonians 5:16-18, Matthew 6:9-13, Matthew 7:7, All of these verses and so much more talk about the importance of prayer. It doesn’t need to be this big production, just ask Him what he wants you to get out of scripture.

Step 5: Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

God can see that you’re actively trying. We are never going to be perfect and we will fall short. Try at first even just to carve 10-15 minutes of your day dedicated to prayer and reading of your Bible. It could be meditating on a few versus, a chapter, whatever you can and build consistency. As you build that consistency, you can add more as you progress. God is proud of you in the progress and in the breakthrough.
