Summary (spoiler free):

If you like mystery, love, and video games, I think you will be hooked on this love story. It goes back and forth between the fictional world of the Murder mystery game set in the Republic Era of China to modern day China.

Hu Xiu and Xiao Zh Yu first meet in the game after Hu Xiu's fiancé broke off their engagement. Her friend takes her to play virtual realty and Xiao Zh Yu was one of the main actors within the establishment. She becomes curious of him and later on rents her house to him looking for money after quitting her job.

She decides she wants to try and get back into the industry she loved but had to give up to support her family, architecture. Come to find out, Xiao Zh Yu is an important figure in the architecture sphere. As he helps her and their friendship starts to grow, they become close.

They make a pretty good team and they bring out the best in one another, but when something from both of their pasts come to light linking them, it could either make or break the potential of a long term relationship.

What I liked

  • Great Plot: I love Asian dramas who have a focus on video games like "Falling into Your Smile" and "Love 020," but this one has a different element aka Virtual Reality. This made me want to jump right into the story. The romance between the two leads is well thought out giving us a clear picture a despite it being a slow burn, it never felt like it dragged.

  • Pacing: The writing was so well done throughout this drama. Not only was it able to give us moments of tension and comedic elements, it did a good job propelling the story forward.

  • Character development: Did Hu Xiu and Xiao Zh Yu have great character development, yes, but I feel that his brother had the best on in the whole series. Pei Zhen I didn't like at the beginning of the show but when you get to know his backgroud and watch him change over the course of the episodes, you see he's not an awful guy. He was just raised by an awful dad and is trying to keep his company afloat while feeling he will never be good enough. his insecurities just get the best of him.

  • The mystery: It keeps you on your seat throughout the duration of the episode. Watching it for a second time I noticed how predictable it is but I was so enamored by the romance that I think most of the conflict that took place was well weaved into the story.

  • Side romance being held off: Now some people might see this as a bad thing but I thought it was a good move. Gong Huai Cong I feel like has a chance with a certian girl within the story (I'm trying not to spoil it) but this women's just went through so much with her last relationship. I think allowing her time to heal was a good choice on the writers part while still hinting at the possibility of a new relationship for her.

  • The visuals: Specifically within the game, I think they did a really good job sticking to the Republic style. They ere able to bring so much life into the setting by Creating a whole town within a building for the players to explore.

What I didn't like

  • Cheating trope: I don't like this trope in books much less tv shows and they used it multiple times within this show. I feel like there are better ways to build conflict without creating this trauma for the characters. Even though it created a good scene for the Xiao Zh Yu to shine and support her it was still at the expense of Hu Xiu.

  • My second lead syndrome heart: Sure Pei Zhen has insufferable moments within the progression of the story, but overall I still wanted to see him get a happy ending. Sure we see a bit of it but I wanted more. I think he was just misunderstood and lashed out a lot because he felt second best. Their was a lot he was left in the dark for and by the end, something in his life blew up in his face. He deserved a better ending in my personal opinion.

  • The main conflict: Now I said the conflict was well written and I still agree, but I feel like it could have been shortened a bit. I think the female leads trauma is valid and she was protecting him even when they were at odds due to the mystery that unfolds but his trauma is vaild as well. I think a lot of blame was placed on him even though he had no say or control over what happened since he was a child at the time.

THIS NEXT PART MAY HAVE SPOILERS YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

It Corresponds to Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

9 Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their efforts. 10 For if either falls, his companion can lift him up; but pity the one who falls without another to lift him up. 11 Also, if two lie down together, they can keep warm; but how can one person alone keep warm? 12 And if someone overpowers one person, two can resist him. A cord of three strands is not easily broken.

In different parts of the story you see this unfold. When Xiao Zh Yu hand gets hurt, she takes the responsability if being his right hand drawing the drafts fo thier important project. Even when they were not at great terms, he never let that affect how she works. He kew what she was capaple of and catapulted her toward her potential.

When they started dating, they became each others encouragers and support. Despite everything that happened after his true name came out. Instead he was the son of the man who cause Hu Xiu's father's accident. Even after distancing herself from him for her family, she still proteted him at work. She had her colleagues to act as if nothing happened.

When Hu Xiu realized how much she loved him, she ran to him. He really needed her in that moment. She lifted his spirits in a time of grief for what was happening knowing that it wasn't his fathers fault. He did so much to fight for the truth and that truth brought clarity.

For me I would give this show a 9/10! It will continually be a show I go back and watch over and over again. As a hopless romantic who also loves a cute workplace romance that has a happy ending, this is right up my alley. I enjoyed the banter between characters and the friendships depicted throughout. These shows always give me hope that one day God will bring me my person.
